Danske Slagterier (DS), known as the Danish Bacon & Meat Council (DBMC) in English, is the industry organisation for the co-operative slaughterhouses, a number of affiliated companies and organisations.

The main objective of the organisation is to head, co-ordinate and provide services of mutual interest to the trade. Thus DS is part of the co-operative structure which characterizes the pig industry.

DS’ Board consists of 10 members – each slaughterhouse is represented by its chairman, and the other members are appointed according to size and number of killings on a yearly basis.

The primary aims of DS are:

To ensure the best possible results to the pig meat sector.
To be spokesman and maintain the interests of the industry towards society.
To form the overall policies of the pig meat industry in co-operation with technical committees and the Board.
To create and develop new ideas related to service and products to benefit the pig producers.
To support and benefit from the close coherence between pig production, slaughtering, processing and marketing.

DS provides a variety of services. A major function is to collect and communicate information internally and externally.

DS’ activities cover the primary pig production, the slaughterhouse process, processing and sales.

The main areas of which are:

Sales promotion (campaigns etc.) at home and abroad.
Surveillance and influence on trade- and market conditions.
Research- and development within pig breeding and production.
Veterinary and health management.
Information and consumer information.

Thorough information is vital in order to manifest an organisation’s point of view. For example, when political and legal decisions, which may be of consequence to the industry, are made.

Consequently DS is member of a number of political and specialist bodies where the interests of the pig sector are protected, mostly Danish but also international.

Denmark ’s membership of the EU is particularly important to the agricultural sector and consequently the pig meat sector and its industries. It has high priority to follow and influence the decisions made in the EU. Likewise is it important to influence legislation and decisions of significance to the Danish pig meat sector.

The financing of DS mainly comes from three sources:

Production levies from killings (Pig Levy Fund)
Partly recapture of land tax
Fee from member companies.
